Why you Should do Veganuary to Start 2018

We all have new years resolutions but we never seem to keep them because we're just not as committed to them as we think. Get fit? I still have Christmas chocolates left over! Give up alcohol? Oh, go on just one glass! Stand up to your boss? I'm shy!

No matter what, we always seem to have an excuse! (The only new year's resolution I've ever been able to keep is to cut down on meat, well, in the end, I cut it out altogether so that was definitely a solid win.)

Veganuary is a great new year's resolution to set and one you'll actually be able to keep. It's a scientific fact that a plant-based diet is what the human body is made for so you can guarantee that this is going to do wonders for your body, well, providing you don't live off Linda McCartney scampi bites and chips like I do.

As humans, we are pretty competitive; I would recommend trying this out with a friend for motivation to carry on. Holding on for longer than they do will be rewarding, and hopefully, by the end, you won't want to go back to eating animal products!

Here are some reasons why you should try Veganuary:

Vegan food is DELICIOUS.

For some reason, many people think vegans eat nothing but bland vegetables all day but that couldn't be further from the truth. Since being vegan, I've tried so many new dishes - my favourite being tofu bulgogi. The list goes on forever but here are just a few vegan dishes you need to try:

It's trendy af, even celebrities are doing it!

Celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Alicia Silverstone and Joaquin Phoenix are vegan and are changing the world by using their platforms to spread the word! Miley Cyrus even has a vegan tattoo (and I'm jealous). Here's an extended list of vegan celebrities, maybe someone you admire is on there!

It could benefit your health.

The research on how exactly a vegan diet can benefit is still pretty unclear because you can still eat unhealthily, however, researchers do know that a diet that's high in red and processed meat is linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancers.

It won't take a lot to get your five-a-day.

A study has shown that only 27% of adults aged 19-64 years achieve the recommended intake of 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Registered Dietitian and Consultant Nutritionist Hala El-Shafie says, "It's often easier for those on a plant-based diet to reach the recommended numbers of fruit and vegetables every day, and the health benefits of this are undeniable."

You'll gain more cooking skills.

Now, I'm not saying you're going to be the next Gordon Ramsey but by increasing the number of beans, pulses, and veg that you eat you'll likely learn some new cooking techniques and recipes along the way. You will also be able to wow your family and friends with your new cooking skills!

You'll still get your correct amount of nutrients (don't worry, protein included.)

Hala says, "As long as a varied diet is consumed, vegan diets can provide all the nutrients needed to be healthy. The exception is Vitamin B12, which can only be found in animal foods. It is recommended that vegans eat foods fortified with B12, such as some cereals, plant milks, yeast extracts, and nutritional yeasts to help meet their needs," "Though protein is often perceived as an area of concern for vegans, most vegans do in fact get enough protein from their diets. But it is important to incorporate a variety of protein sources to keep your diet interesting and satisfying," Try adding pulses, nuts, seeds, and grains to your diet to get your protein fix.

Go on, give it a try! It doesn't hurt. Guilt-free, cruelty-free eating is the way forward and is taking over the world very, very fast! Sign up to Veganuary here.

Please leave a comment if you have any suggestions for future blog posts. I am also happy to answer any questions about veganism you may have.
